Brief Biography of Tony Thompson, Black Hawk County Sheriff

Tony Thompson's Sheriff's Office Service

-Currently the Public Information Officer/Community Services Coordinator

-President of the Black Hawk County Law Enforcement Association and has presided over the association for 8 of the last 9 years.

-Employed since 1994 at the Sheriff’s Office

-Worked nearly all divisions of the agency, currently assigned to the Patrol Division.

-Currently assigned as the Team Leader of the SWAT team.

-Worked in the Jail Division and on the Jail Transition Team writing the policies and procedures for the opening of the new county Jail.

-Developed the inmate orientation procedure and established the inmate orientation video.

-Assigned to the Iowa State Sheriff's and Deputies Association's- State Jails Committee (worked with the state Jail Inspector and the Department of Corrections, to establish Iowa Administrative Code Chapter 50- State Jail Standards)

-Trained and assigned as a Computer Crimes Investigator for 3 years.

-Developed, wrote and fielded the new drug education curriculum “DON’T-Drugs Offer No Tomorrow”.

-Member of the Teamster's Local 238

-Written over $15 million in equipment and monetary grants for the Sheriff’s Office.

-Established 2 new Neighborhood Watch Groups and regenerated/rejuvenated 2 more in the county

-Teaches law enforcement lessons for local Driver’s Education Classes throughout the Cedar Valley.

-Teaches building searches and other law enforcement lessons to police cadets in the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy.

-Teaches Interpersonal Communications and Verbal Judo classes for the Iowa State Sheriff's and Deputies Association, State Jails School.

-Established the Senior’s Safe Cell Phone Program- a program that provides free cellular telephones to senior (60+) citizens in Black Hawk County. Over 6,000 cell phones have been distributed to date.(Assisted 10 other county Sheriff’s Offices to do the same program for their citizens as well)

-Raised the money and initiated the Welcome to Meth Warfare Campaign which gathered $18,000 in private donations to purchase Anhydrous Ammonia Nurse Tank Locks, effectively locking all anhydrous in Black Hawk County to prevent the illegal theft and production of Methamphetamine. This program became a statewide effort when I contacted Senator Harkin’s office and convinced them to generate Federal dollars to bolster the initiative to positively impact every county in the state. -Worked on the Governor’s Safety Taskforce for Alcohol Awareness and aided in developing legislation and public education to lower the drunk driving limit from .10 to .08.

-Conducted the first dramatic drinking and driving high school educational program “Every 15 Minutes” in the state (in Hudson), and assisted 20 other school districts across the state in presenting it to their student body.

-Prepares and presents the Sheriff’s Office Annual Report yearly.

 

Tony Thompson's Military Service (Iowa Army National Guard)

-Currently assigned to the Regional Training Institute- Iowa Military Academy (since 1996) as a Senior TAC NCO/Operations NCO for Officer Candidate’s School (OCS).

-Have instructed and managed the Basic and Advanced Non-Commissioned Officer’s Course for the State of Iowa

-Have taught Total Army Instructor’s Training Course and Small Group Instructor’s Training Course.

-Have completed Advanced Non-Commissioned Officer’s Course, Total Army Instructor’s Training Course, Small Group Instructor’s Training Course, Tactical Training Officers Course, Battle Staff NCO Course, and Tactics Certification Course (all combat leadership trainer’s courses)

-Military Police officer, United States Army since 1989

-Military Police Investigator since 1993

-Has deployed 5 times including: Panama (1989), Saudi Arabia/Kuwait/Iraq (1991), Two State of Iowa Disaster Deployments (1993 Flood, 1996 Washington, Ia Tornado), and Bosnia (1995)

 

Tony Thompson's Civilian Education

-BA Degree, University of Northern Iowa in Communications

-Has begun work on a Masters in Public Administration

-Adjunct Professor for Communications Studies, College of Humanities and Fine Arts at University of Northern Iowa since 1996.

 

Tony Thompson's Honors and Awards

-Awarded the McCartney Award from the Iowa Law Enforcement Basic Academy for conscientious performance- 1994

-Awarded the 300 Point Club Award for physical fitness excellence from the Iowa Law Enforcement Basic Academy-1994

-Awarded Deputy of the Year honors for the year 1999.

-Awarded the Department of Public Safety, Commissioner’s Special Award for Traffic Safety - 2001

-Awarded the Drug Enforcement Administration's Enrique Camarena "Certificate of Appreciation” for drug enforcement efforts in Black Hawk County-2003.

-Awarded the Iowa Community Betterment Leadership Award from the Governor of the State of Iowa- 2003.

-Currently Vice-president of the Executive Board for the Aspire Therapeutic Riding Program.

-Currently on the Executive Board for the Winnebago Council of the Boy Scouts of America.

-Actively involved in fundraising for Habitat for Humanity and Big Brothers/Big Sisters in Black Hawk County and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

-Actively involved in Iowa Special Olympics and local coordinator for the Special Olympics Law Enforcement Torch Run and Polar Plunge.
